FAQ # 4

What Handicapping Profiles should I use to handicap a race?

When you first receive ALL-Ways, it includes fifteen default Handicapping Profiles. There are five groups of profiles as shown below. Each group has three profiles. The second profile in each group favors early running horses. The third profile in each group favors late runners. The first profile in each group does not consider pace (early or late runners) at all.

def: ds late   def: dr late   def: turf late   def: ds maid late   def: dr maid late

The first thing to do in determining which profile(s) to use is to decide which group to use. In the Handicapping Module, the race display shows you if the race is to be run on the dirt or the turf. It also shows you the distance. Remember that sprints are less than one mile and routes are one mile or longer. Finally, under the Race Type, a "M" stands for Maiden Claiming races and a "S" stands for Maiden Special Weight races , both of which are considered maiden races. All other Race Type designations are non-maiden races. Knowing these three things (surface, distance and Race Type) shows you which group to use.

The next issue is which of the three profiles within the group to use. In the Professional Edition, you can use all three profiles simultaneously. Most people put the non biased profile in position #1, the early biased profile in position #2 and the late biased profile in position #3. ALL-Ways then handicaps the race three times in just a second or two and integrates the results on the Contender Summary Report. The top four picks of each profile are also shown on the Oddsline and the Paceline reports.

In the Standard Edition, you must select one of the profiles. We recommend that, in most cases, you use the non-biased profile. Here are situations where you may want to use one of the biased profiles:

The logic of using the biased profiles as shown above is explained in the ALL-Ways Newsletter of October 1996 in the article on pace handicapping.

Note that if you have the Standard Edition, you may want to handicap the race multiple time using a different profile each time.

When you have built up the races in your Race Database, you should use the Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) Default function in the Analysis Module to automatically replace the original default profiles with the MRA profiles. These MRA profiles still use the non-biased, early biased and late biased scheme as the original default profiles. So, the same recommended guidelines apply.
