FAQ # 36
ALL-WaysTM Support

What are the best settings for the minimum and maximum number of races for the Multiple Regression Analysis functions?

ALL-Ways lets you decide the minimum number of races you must have before the Multiple Regression Analysis functions will generate Handicapping Profiles. You can also limit the number of races that are analyzed. Both of these figures can be adjusted in the PREFERENCE section of the CUSTOM Module. Keep in mind that these minimum and maximum numbers apply to the specific race type categories that MRA addresses as opposed to the total number of races in the Race Database for a track. For example, if you set the minimum to 10 races, it means that the MRA Default function will create the non maiden dirt sprint profiles if there are at least 10 non maiden dirt sprints and it will create the non maiden dirt route profiles if there are at least 10 non maiden dirt route races and so on.

We have found that MRA generated Handicapping Profiles based on as few as 10 races seem to do a respectable job of isolating contenders. Based on this, we have set our minimum number of races for Multiple Regression Analysis to 10 races. Of course, the profiles get even better in terms of identifying the win, place and show horses as you add more races.

We have also have had better success when we limit the maximum number of races for Multiple Regression Analysis to about 60 races as opposed to the default value of 100 races. We feel less strongly about this however.

So, we suggest you set the minimum number of races to 10 and the maximum number of races to 60.

One very powerful feature of ALL-Ways is the ability to create profiles and then test them using the Database Run Analysis function. So, by all means, test to see if your profiles work better by raising and lowering the minimum and maximum figures.
