FAQ # 10

Which are better to use, the horse’s paceline figures or the horse’s best 2 out of 3 average figures?

The Hall pace and speed figures and the BRIS pace and speed figures are all available for the horse’s single paceline race and also for the average of the horse’s best 2 out of its last three races. So, the issue is, which set of pace and speed figures is the best to use.

We have a bias on this in that we strongly favor the horse’s paceline figures. The paceline is selected based on being the horse’s most recent race, within its last 5 races, that is on the same surface as today’s race (dirt or turf) and that is for the same distance category as today’s race (sprint or route). If there is no such race, ALL-Ways automatically selects the horse’s last race as the paceline race. In most cases, ALL-Ways is able to find a representative race in the horse’s last 5 past performances and, more often than not, it is the horse’s most recent race. This is why, in most cases, we prefer the horse’s paceline figures. The paceline is generally recent and representative of today’s race.

Still another reason we prefer the paceline figures is that they tend to highlight bigger differences between horses. The best 2 of 3 figures tend to average out in a tighter range making it more difficult to spot the superior performer(s).

Now, with all that said, you can run an Impact Analysis Report in the ALL-Ways Analysis Module and it will tell you both how powerful and how profitable each factor is at the track and for the kinds of races at the track for which you are running the analysis. Please remember to segment maiden and non maiden races (i.e., Run a separate analysis for maiden and a separate analysis for non maidens.).

So, you can follow our lead and go with the paceline race or you can run the Impact Value Analysis and let ALL-Ways show you which is best. Because it is easier to separate horses using the paceline figures, this tips the scale, in our opinion, towards the paceline figures.
